A smart door should have a clear state when batteries run low, power fails, Wi-Fi disappears or the app service is unavailable. Determine whether it stays locked, remains usable, follows a stored schedule or requires a manual cover.
Test the mechanical lock and emergency routine before giving the dog unsupervised access. Everyone in the household should know how to disable the door quickly if wildlife, a loose dog, smoke or severe weather makes outdoor access unsafe.
