Food compatibility and portions
Measure the actual kibble rather than relying on a generic small, medium or large label. Shape, oiliness and crumbs affect dispensing. Use only food sizes and types the manufacturer explicitly supports.
Dispense the same programmed portion repeatedly into a kitchen scale. Variation matters more for small meals. The app’s portion number is not proof of what reached the bowl.
Jam behaviour
A feeder should make a failed dispense visible. Look for a useful alert and a mechanism that can be accessed without disassembling the entire machine. Test it while you are home before depending on it.
Power and internet failure
Confirm whether the schedule is stored on the feeder and continues without Wi-Fi. Check battery backup, low-battery alerts and whether a clock resets after complete power loss.

Cleaning, pests and dog resistance
Food-contact parts should be removable and practical to wash. Inspect seams, the lid seal and the route kibble takes through the mechanism.
Consider tipping, pawing, chewing and the ability to nose the chute. Automation should reduce routine work, not remove human oversight.
